What is a riot? According to law, a riot is where 12 or more persons who are present together use or threaten unlawful violence for a common purpose and the conduct of them (taken together) is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his or her personal safety, each of the persons using unlawful violence for the common purpose is guilty of riot. Only persons who do anything are guilty of riot, so you could prosecute just 1 person as long as you can prove another 11 were threatening but didn’t physically do anything. The recent riots throughout London and now further afield have raised many questions that affect us all. For owners of businesses and  business premises,  these questions now include  how to prepare  for the potential disorder that appears to be spreading throughout our urban centres. I am certain that many conversations are focused around how this disorder could  happen on such a scale and without any apparent warning but the more important question is why?  The "middle class" riots following the cuts in student tuition fees and now the "urban poor" riots  and low morale in the Police Force due to impending cuts are merely symptoms of a wider malaise in which Nero fiddles whilst Rome Burns. Workplace Parking Levy – ‘Small businesses and how the workplace parking levy will affect you.’

Some of you may have noticed recently Nottingham City Council quietly slip a leaflet on the Workplace Parking Levy through your letter box. The unpopular scheme is an attempt by the Council to create funding for an extension to the existing tram system, the redevelopment of Nottingham Railway Station and supporting the Link bus network. The leaflet is aimed at employers who provide 10 or fewer workplace parking places, although these businesses/organisations will be required to apply for a license, they will receive a 100% discount from the charge. Those employers who provide 11 or more workplace parking places will be required to pay the charge for all of their parking spaces from the 1st April 2012, but importantly they must have a license by 1st October 2011. The Hour – The New Vintage Production by the BBC uses Exeid Lighting Partners Anglepoise to Create that Vintage Feel.

The first episode of THE HOUR was shown on BBC1 this week and you can tell that the production team at the BBC have realised the interest in Vintage Retro style as most of the first episode was shot in a late 1950s office environment. One scene showed the two main characters discussing the merits of what they described as an Anglepoise lamp which Freddie Lyon,  played by Ben Whishaw, had bought for Bel Rowley, played by Romola Garai. Questioning the BBCs’ continuity, it appears that the lamp in question was not in fact an Anglepoise but more likely to be a Memlite.
