The Derby Velodrome will employ super-modern architecture
There’s no doubt that an excitement for the 2012 London Olympics has gripped the nation and as the games draw nearer, Derby unveils its £20million Derby Velodrome plans. Hailed as the ‘ultimate leisure centre and concert venue’, the new Velodrome, situated at Pride Park, will be a welcome addition to Derby’s local culture. Features will include a 5000-capacity concert hall, a state-of-the-art gym, 12 court sports hall and an outdoor cycle track that will circle the nearby nature reserve. The council said the new arena, due to open in February 2014, would replace some of its older sports centres. Councillor Alan Grimadell, Derby City Council Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “The development of the leisure strategy will place Derby firmly on the sporting map and will provide residents with new and modern facilities to be proud of. It said: “Our existing facilities have served us well for a number of years but are now in poor condition with a maintenance bill that would run to many millions of pounds. “The indoor and outdoor hubs will become beacons of excellence in the city.”

This will surely provide a boost to the city’s economy and attract a wide crowd from all around the East Midlands. Derby City Council also has plans for 2 new swimming complexes, further increasing the city’s value for leisure. The Velodrome will be built on Derby’s Pride Park, a short distance from Commercial Property Consultancy exeidgroup.com’s, newly acquired Sitwell House. This is great news for clients with an office in Sitwell House, as the new business opportunities allowed by such a huge local project are limitless. You could even pop over for a quick gym session on your work break, or use the badminton and basketball courts or cafe! Construction firm Mace have been chosen to complete the project. Mace have previously worked on the refurbishment of Derby’s Council House, Birmingham New Street Station, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, as well as the velodrome for the London 2012 Olympics. Nine companies submitted bids for the project but Mace impressed the most, both with its design and value for money. No doubt, the Derby Velodrome will become a cousin to the awe inspiring Olympic Stadium.
